.tel Domain Name Launch

Advertised as a '...new, innovative and user-friendly domain name...', the .tel suffix was launched globally on 3 December 2008.

The introduction of the .tel domain name is aimed at attracting those businesses that wish to have fast and efficient access to their contact details and their clients’ contact details on the internet, whether on the go or in the office.

How it will work

The .tel registry will publish ‘Telepages,’ a searchable directory of information and business contacts stored in .tel domain names worldwide. Major search engines such as Google and Yahoo will index .tel domain names. It stores contact details directly into the infrastructure of the internet, as opposed to other domain names where information is stored in html web pages.

Owners of .tel domain names will be able to manage and control the information stored in their domain name through the use of a desktop or any mobile device that can access the internet, and one does not have to access an html web page in order to view the information. Owners will be able to add, alter or delete the contents of their .tel domain name.

How to apply

Between 3 December 2008 and 3 February 2009 proprietors of registered trade marks had priority to apply for .tel domain names. It is now open for general registration.
